Devon Cadwell Bazata

Greetings classmates,
My mother always said "Home is where you hang your hat." For the past year, Florida's greater Orlando area is where my husband, our two sons and I hang our hats. We moved here from Princeton, New Jersey one year ago for a job opportunity my husband wanted to pursue. Before our move, I worked full-time as the Publications Editor/Copywriter for McCarter Theatre Center for the Performing Arts at Princeton University and maintained an active freelance career writing magazine and newspaper articles. Other professional experience includes various jobs as a staff writer, assistant editor and interim editor in the newspaper and magazine fields. I am now able to devote myself exclusively to freelance writing — a job I love.

Academically speaking, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Kansas in Lawrence in 1984. I am at the midway point in completing my master's degree in Journalism, News/Editorial at UNL. This is my fifth graduate class. During the spring 2003 semester I visited the Lincoln campus and attended a class 'in person' rather than as a distance student. Having a 'virtual' student actually materialize from the digital ether seemed to surprise some of my classmates — needless to say it was a fun experience! Personally speaking, this past year in Florida has been filled with many "wow" moments such as watching three space shuttle launches, kayaking with dolphins and manatee and eating freshly picked oranges off one of our orange trees. These 'ups' have been tempered with some of the 'downs' often encountered in a move (especially one with middle-school-aged kids involved,) but all in all the transition has been a smooth one.

Life has taken my family of four from New York to Boston to San Jose, (California) to Princeton and now to Florida. The one thing that has remained constant over the last three moves is the connectedness we've been able to maintain to each area — thanks to the Internet. It has enabled me to continue my freelance career in New Jersey, work toward earning my master's degree in Nebraska and stay current with colleagues, friends and family around the country.

No matter where I physically find myself, the Internet has provided me with a virtual place to hang my hat, no matter what part of the country I currently call 'home.'

Yang Burhanuddin

Hi. My name is Yang Burhanuddin. I'm an undergraduate majoring in Advertising. Advertising was my first choice when I made it back in high school, but tried Computer Science and Management Information System before reasurring myself that I made the right descision the first time.

My favorite vacation spot in Indonesia is Bali. With the shocking bomb news, Bali prices dropped months after. Vacation for 3 days with hotel and breakfast went as low as $40! I wished I was there, maybe that dolphin sighting hunt that I wanted was also cheap. Photography and music are my favorite hobbies. I'll post one of my favorite picture I've taken if I can find it in my HD. I like making music for fun on my cheesy blue keyboard. Maybe sell them one day like many mp3.com artists. I took this class not sure what I was really going to learn. But I'm already learning some interesting stuff.

Cherie Krueger

Hello all,
I'm a UNL grad (news-ed) originally from Norfolk. I've worked as a copyeditor at LJS and as a reporter and designer for a small, local PR company. For the last 2.5 years I've been working here at the U, so I'm taking advantage of the tuition remission by pursing a degree in journalism with marketing and advertising minors.

I work in Extended Education (formerly the Division of Continuing Studies - before the budget cuts), producing the promotional pieces for independent study and graduate-level distance courses. I'm interested in this class because half of my job is also maintaining our seb sites. The major ones are NebraskaHS.unl.edu and extended.unl.edu. It is a pretty fun job, and I'm always learning new things.

I decided to officially call Lincoln home a few years ago when I bought my first house. It is a cute, older house in the East Campus neighborhood, and like some of my classmates, I've discovered that I really love home improvement. Much of my free time is spent attempting new projects, trying to keep my grass as green as the neighbors' and spending money on new gadgets at Menards.
